Ingredient Alternatives

Whether you have to replace ingredients due to dietary restrictions, limited access, or simply preference, here are some great substitutions:

  • ¼ tsp of baking soda = 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ cup butter = ½ cup coconut oil, margarine, or other solidified oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup yogurt; or 1 cup milk + 1 tbsp vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch = 1 ½ tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp lemon juice = ½ tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup brown sugar = 1 cup white sugar + 2 tbsp molasses
  • 1 egg = ¼ cup applesauce or mashed banana; 1 tbsp ground flaxseed or chia seeds + 3 tbsp of water, 2 tbsp arrowroot powder + 3 tbsp water
